AUDIO: Jus Now Remix Machel Montano + Kes the Band

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Jus-Now

Jus Now, the international production combo consisting of Bristol, England’s Interface and T&T-based LAZAbeam, are making some of the freshest soca  right now. (They also made one of the coolest videos we’ve seen all year, for the soca-inspired-but not-exactly-soca title track from their One Time EP)  “Differentology” excepted, they’re responsible for a currently scorching Bunji Garlin’s best tracks this year, including the calypso-fueled “Savage” and “Tun Up” off the aforementioned One Time. LazaBEAM, operating solo, produced another recent Bunji favorite, “The Canvas”

LargeUp Premiere: Jus Now’s “One Time” Video

Words by Jesse Serwer—

JusNow-OneTimeEP

Occupying a space between power soca, steelpan and the freakiest outer limits of U.K. dance music, “One Time” is the debut single from Jus Now, the Anglo-Trinidadian duo of Interface (of Bristol, England) and LAZAbeam (of T&T). As jarring as the song’s unique sound is the accompanying video, a manic trip through Port of Spain’s streets, roti shops, parrot’s nests and a dojo full of karate kids. We’ve seen some ambitious soca videos this Carnival season, but this is some really next-level business.

Audio: Stream Bunji Garlin’s “Savage”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Bunji Garlin isn’t one of these uptown soca artists who rides in to Carnival on a high horse. No, on his new groovy tune “Savage,” Trinidad’s most rugged-voiced soca warrior emphatically labels himself and his crew, “anti-stoosh.” They’re so not stoosh that folks claim they’re from de bush, Garlin continues on the tune, produced by British-Trini production team Jus Now using a sample of “Savage” by Trini calypsonian Maestro.
