Found Footage: Watch Usain Bolt on Saturday Night Live

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Usain Bolt on Saturday Night Live

Usain Bolt made his Saturday Night Live debut this weekend, with a pair of cameos on the show, hosted by Christina Applegate. Bolt’s appearances were brief and fairly deep into the skits, but he managed to steal the show in a parody of Joe Biden and Paul Ryan’s vice presidential debate. He also showed up in a new skit in The Californians, an ongoing Fred Armisen storyline parodying the vanity (and blonde hair) of L.A. residents, giving us this classic facial expression.

Gold Punany: A-Trak + Natalie Storm Connect on “Like the Dancefloor”

It seems that A-Trak, Fool’s Gold Records and Pitchfork Media have caught on to what we’ve known for oh, about five years now… that Natalie Storm is the shit. The indie rock website today premiered the video for “Like the Dancefloor,” a reworking of A-Trak and DJ Zinc’s “Stingray” featuring vocals from the author of our very own sex column, Punany Monologues. We’ve long wondered why the electrofied garrison dancehall innovator doesn’t get more love from the wider music world, so this development is definitely a good look.

Viral Video Watch: Mega Banton Returns with “Badman Style”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

We’re used to Asia jocking Jamaican music trends and not the other way around but Psy’s “Gangnam Style” is obviously a gamechanger. Syllable-wise,  “Gangnam Style” lends itself pretty neatly to a Jamaican version of the Internet meme called “Badman Style,” and that’s exactly what Mega Banton, Singer J and G Loc have made, in what is sure to be the Caribbean’s biggest viral video this week. The video quality of the clip is pretty terrible but it still manages to be pretty funny. Look out for the mechanic pulling bottles out of a car hood, and the “sickcurity dawg.”

Throwback Thursdays: Resident Alien’s “Mr. Boops”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Prince Paul is known for his work with De La Soul, Gravediggaz, 3rd Bass and Handsome Boy Modeling School but the veteran hip-hop producer is no stranger to Caribbean music, either—or at least parodies of it. As highlighted in our recent rundown of Toppa Top fake reggae tunes, 2005′s ItsTrumental boasted a hilarious faux dancehall tune about a Boston creme donut (“Boston Top”). Baby Elephant, Paul and Don Newkirk’s project with P-Funk’s Bernie Worrell, featured Yellowman on the tongue-in-cheek “Cool Runnings,” from their lone LP.

You Rate It: OMI’s “Cheerleader” Video

Words by Jesse Serwer—

OMI’s “Cheerleader” isn’t new—there’s been audio online for at least a year—but the catchy pop reggae tune has picked up steam lately, and now has a sharp-looking (if slightly corny), story-driven video that can only help its cause. The “Cheerleader” of the title isn’t one of those pompom-waving girls at sports games but a supportive woman with her man’s best interest at heart, as illustrated in the video’s Bonnie and Clyde-style bank heist. With its sax-y, accessible riddim from Shabba Ranks/Patra producer Clifton “Specialist” Dillon, “Cheerleader” has the potential to be a major international hit and put OMI, a young singer from Clarendon, Jamaica, with echoes of Tarrus Riley in his voice, on the map. The video definitely doesn’t look like anything you’ve seen from a recent reggae act—it was shot in Oregon. Watch “Cheerleader” below, and, if you like what you see, check his video for “Standing On All 3′s”.
