Chris Blackwell: “There’s A Guy Called Chronixx Who I Think Is Really Great”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Chris Blackwell and Jimmy Buffett

It looks like it might be reggae week over at Rolling Stone. Besides for running some controversial comments from Snoop Lion about Bunny Wailer, the magazine’s website interviewed Island Records founder Chris Blackwell (that’s him above left, with Jimmy Buffett and friend at Blackwell Rum’s US launch party two years ago), who offered some interesting perspectives on Jamaican music, past and present. Besides for speaking on the 40th anniversary of Bob Marley’s Catch a Fire, Blackwell shouted out some of his favorite current Jamaican acts: Chronixx, No-Maddz, Raging Fyah and Shaggy.

Visual Culture: A Q+A with Atlantic Records Creative Director Greg Burke

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton:::Photos by Martei Korley:::Artwork by Greg Burke—

Jamaica-born, Long Island-raised Greg Burke has designed covers for some of the most notable albums of the last two decades, from Missy Elliott’s Supa Dupa Fly to Jay-Z’s The Blueprint 3—and a whole slew of ’90s underground rap classics, too, like Group Home’s Livin’ Proof. Currently, Burke is the VP creative director at Atlantic Records, where he oversees design packages for LPs by everyone from T.I. to Jason Mraz. In this sitdown interview at Atlantic’s Manhattan office, he shares stories from his days designing for Island, Elektra and Tommy Boy Records in the ’90s (including the particularly amusing tales of his hiring by the latter’s Tom Silverman, and a never-released design for Buju Banton), the dying art of CD booklet illustration and collaborating creatively with T.I. and Jay-Z.

LargeUp TV: Chris Blackwell Talks Rum

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

A’right. You remember when we told you about that bashy we went to for the New York launch of Blackwell rum? Perhaps not. Things can get a little haze after a few Black & Stormies, so let us recap: Chris Blackwell is the founder of Island Records. He is the man largely responsible for the global careers of Bob Marley, Grace Jones, U2 (and a few other icons). He also maintains a string of the coolest hotels on the planet (which happen to be in Jamaica), including GoldenEye, the former residence of James Bond author Ian Fleming–a family friend. Chris Blackwell is a living legend, that is the takeaway from this paragraph. On to the next:

Fire Starter: Trailer for Bob Marley Doc “Making of A Legend”

Words by Jesse Serwer

Bob+Marley+Esther+Anderson

In March we told you about Bob Marley: Making of a Legend, the documentary that Jamaican actress/model/photographer Esther Anderson has made using footage she shot of a young Bob Marley and the Wailers during their formative Burnin’/Catch A Fire period circa 1973. While Marley documentaries are emerging left and right, Anderson, who was romantically involved with Marley at the time, appears to have something unique in the intimate, never-before-seen footage she shot of the future superstar. Shown in Jamaica and London earlier this year as a “work in progress,” the finished version gets its official premiere at the Edinburgh Film Festival in Scotland on June 22. Watch the trailer below.
