Kes the Band Daryll Willoughby

Life is good, it’s better when your life revolves around singing about having a good time ’cause your job is being a soca singer, and it’s even better if your name is Kees Diffenthaler. The leader of Trinidad’s Kes the Band just seems to be having an exceptional time at life, the latest exhibit being his video for “Tuesday on the Rocks,” his ridiculously catchy tune on Bambino Musik and Justin “Jus Bus” Nation’s Gyal Season riddim.

You Rate It: Kgnston feat. Beenie Man, “5 Cent”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

You never know who you’ll run into at the mall in Kingston— perhaps Kingston herself. Wait, we mean Kgnston. LargeUp was getting a meal at the food court in the Sovereign Mall in Liguanea when we had the pleasant surprise of bumping into beautiful model Jacqui Edwards at the food court. Jacqui told us she’s been recording music under the name Kgnston (yes, no ‘i’) and showed us her new, Mykal Cushnie-directed video for “5 Cent,” her catchy island pop version of Colin Lucas’ “Dollar Wine.” The slick video starts on the Kingston waterfront, showcasing local BMX riders, before moving to a warehouse party downtown. Musically, “5 Cent” is closer to Europe than Jamaica but Beenie’s involvement and the classic “Dollar Wine” hook gives it the necessary Caribbean vibes. Watch below, and tell us what you think.

Back to Bass: Watch No Doubt’s Jamaican Street Dance-Inspired “Settle Down” Video

Words by Jesse Serwer, Photo by Ashley Andrea Beliveau—

Music video premieres rarely achieve event status anymore but the unveiling of a new No Doubt video—their first in 10 years—is definitely a big deal. Apparently, half-hour, Ryan Seacrest-hosted E Channel special big. For those of us more curious about how much Jamaican flavor the Lady Saw/Bounty Killer collaborators will squeeze onto their upcoming, Major Lazer-produced Push and Shove LP than what Gwen will be singing about, the dubby “Settle Down” definitely offers an idea, though not nearly as much as the street dance-inspired video they’ve just premiered. The clip sees each of the band’s members driving personalized big rigs (guitarist Tom Dumont’s boasts a massive mobile sound system setup) before convening in a sort of family reunion that quickly turns into a vaguely Passa Passa-esque street party. Authentic yard vibes? Hardly. But a worthy sequel to “Underneath it All”? Perhaps.
