Happy Birthday: Jacob ‘Killer’ Miller

Jacob-Miller-Reggae

There was a point in the late 70′s when Bob Marley had become such an international icon that Jamaica’s people were identifying more with artists who were still based locally. Jacob Miller and his band Inner Circle were pretty much running things in this era and were getting far more play in the dancehall than Marley. Featured prominently in the cult classic film Rockers, “The Killer” will always be remembered for his larger than life persona. Splashes of his unique vocal style can be heard in plenty of contemporary artists, (See Sizzla’s “Praise Ye Jah, hail the empor-ah-ah-ah”) plus Jacob Miller’s shirtless, big-belly man swag was unprecedented!

To mark the late, great bigman’s earthstrong, we’re hittin’ you with a track off the new Jacob Miller tribute album, Aloha To The Killer (Dubshot Records) which features all Hawaiian reggae artists. Listen to this vocally embellished version of  the classic “Tenement Yard” by Irie Love.

Video: Jimmy Fallon’s Barbershop Quartet Covers Inner Circle’s “Sweat”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Last night, Jimmy Fallon decided to make good on a request from an audience member wondering why they’d never heard a hybrid of reggae music and barbershop quartets. Claiming to be a member of a reggae-loving quartet called the Ragtime Gals, Fallon produced a trio of Vaudevillians in red, gold and green blazers, donned one himself, and joined the group in a rendition of “Sweat (A La La La Long)” from our friends Inner Circle. The results were positively hilarious. Watch the clip here:

Steppin’ Out: Inner Circle’s Jackie Mittoo x Dubstep Project

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Inner Circle have been a reggae band for over 40 years but, in the midst of touring the world repping Jamaica in its 50th year, they’ve taken an unexpected excursion into dubstep. They debuted their take on the sound live in Hawaii recently and now they’ve passed us the first track from their upcoming Dubshot Records LP, Dub Planet X. “Steppin’ Dub,” a version of the late Jackie Mittoo classic “Drum Song.”
