Free Reggae: Marley’s Mellow Mood “Tune In Tuesdays” Presents Hollie Cook

Marley’s Mellow Mood has come up with a new way to “free the people with music,” launching a weekly free music download series dubbed Tune in Tuesdays. Each Tuesday, this link features a download of a new single from a different emerging artist. Marley’s Mellow Mood has tapped LargeUp to co-curate the series, and this week the featured artist is LargeUp favorite, Hollie Cook.

We’re so big on Hollie, we named her the new artist of the year for 2011 and called her self-titled debut the best Caribbean album of the year. If you haven’t heard her incredible modern take on Lover’s Rock yet, now’s your chance. Go here to download “Cry,” and get to know Hollie with her answers to some of our questions below. (Go here for our full “Rookie of the Year” interview with Hollie).

Audio: Peetah Morgan x Hollie Cook, “Independent Jamaica”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

With Jamaican independence celebrations just days away, VP Records is set to drop its Out of Many, 50 Years of Reggae compilation on Tuesday, July 31. The three-disc set, which features one song from each of the 50 years since Jamaica gained its independence, begins and ends with the same tune: “Independent Jamaica” originally recorded by Lord Creator in 1962 and covered, on the compilation’s only previously unreleased track, by Peetah Morgan (of Morgan Heritage) and Hollie Cook.

Rink and Feisty: Watch Hollie Cook’s “And the Beat Goes On” Video

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Hollie Cook and Prince Fatty’s entire Hollie Cook In Dub LP is excellent but if there’s one track that really makes our mouths go agape, it’s Hollie’s cover of the Whispers’ 1980 electro-soul classic “And The Beat Goes On.” The Whispers’ version (produced by Leon Sylvers of the Sylvers’ fame) is one of those timeless R&B songs that we grew up listening to on Sunday afternoons, and Hollie and Fatty’s version takes it in a whole new, yet equally ethereal direction. The video was shot in a rink full of dayglo-ed rollerskaters, evoking the colorful haze through which our own early ’80s memories are filtered.

Contest: Win “Hollie Cook In Dub” LPs + 45s

Words by Jesse Serwer—

We were so enamored with the Lovers Rock revival vibes of Hollie Cook’s self-titled debut we named it our top album for 2011 and bequeathed her with “Rookie of the Year” status. Hardly skipping a beat, Hollie and her creative partner/producer Prince Fatty have already given us one of our favorite albums of this year in Hollie Cook In Dub. Revelatory dub versions of songs from Hollie’s debut predominate, but there’s also dubs of a few tunes that weren’t on that album, like Hollie’s cover of “And The Beat Goes On” by Philly soul greats the Whispers, and “For Me You Are.” The good people at Hollie’s label Mr. Bongo have given us a pair of Hollie Cook In Dub LPs to give away, along with a pair of bonus 45 singles of “And The Beat Goes On” and “For Me You Are” (featuring originals on the A-side and dubs on the B) for each winner.
