TONIGHT: Los Rakas, New Kingston + The Encyclopedia of Reggae on The LargeUp Sessions

Words by LargeUp Crew—

LargeUp Sessions

We’ve got a whole heap of guests stopping by the LargeUp Sessions on RadioLily.com tonight: Los Rakas, New Kingston and author Mike Alleyne. Though they come from very different places— New Kingston are a three-piece band from NYC via Jamaica, and Los Rakas are a hip-hop duo from California’s Bay Area, by way of Panama—both groups come to the LargeUp Sessions fresh off the Dark ‘N Stormy Tour with Collie Buddz, which crisscrossed the Western US this fall. Meanwhile, Alleyne, a professor at Middle Tennessee University, will discuss his newly published Encyclopedia of Reggae book with us.

Lovin the Crew: Kardinal Offishall Introduces Island Boy Cartel

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Kardinal Offishall's Island Boy Cartel

When we spoke with Kardinal Offishall last summer, we noted the quantity of fellow West Indian folks in the Jamaican-Canadian MC’s circle, from rapper The Kid Daytona (an Antiguan) to DJ Benny Demus (a Virgin Islander) and Prince and Omar from clothing brand RepJAl—all of whom appeared in his video for “The Invention of Truth”—and inquired as to whether he’d ever entertained a project organizing that talent pool. While Kardinal said he liked the idea, he noted the timing had to be right. “I think it would be good for everybody to come together but we also have to be able to read the times: The Caribbean influence in music comes in waves,” he said. “You have to be sure that if you’re gonna do it, it’s at a time when people are open to it.”

No Liad: 2 Chainz Collaborates with Jamaican Producer

Words by Jesse Serwer—

2 of Everything 2 Chainz

Love him or hate him, you can’t avoid 2 Chainz. The G.O.O.D. Music rapper’s singles “I’m Different” and “No Lie” are inescapable as his features on “Problems’ by A$AP Rocky and Juicy J’s “Banda A Make Her Dance.” Yesterday, we came across a new song, ”2 of Everything” by Boy Wonder a.k.a. Eddy Souza that features Mr. Chainz and some yardie mic chatter. A quick internet investigation reveals that the song was co-produced by RiecesPiec.es, a producer from Tampa by way of Jamaica whose previous work includes an official remix of M.I.A. ft Jay Z – “XXXO” and an EP that saw him mash up recent dancehall tunes by Baby Cham with recent singles by Future and Lil Wayne and TI.
