As you’ve probably heard, hip-hop icon Snoop Dogg recently took his career in a radical new direction, inspired by reggae, Bob Marley and the message of Rastafari. Snoop spent some time in Jamaica last winter to work on his debut reggae album, holding a press conference at Manhattan’s Miss Lily’s (where the pics in this post were shot) to announce his transformation from rapper to reggae artist and trading his canine status in for his new feline moniker, Snoop Lion.

As we were posting today’s Mixtape Mondays column this morning, we could only wonder: where were all the Halloween mixes? Turns out, the exact set of tunes we had in mind was right under our nose. On his Heatwave crew’s weekly Rinse FM show last night, our Cockney & Yardie columnist Gabriel Myddleton dropped a creepy and sinister Hallow’s Eve special full of duppies, vampires, pumpkins, monsters and all sorts of other spooky bashment (including a whole set of tunes on Equiknoxx’s eerily hot White Label riddim. You only got but a couple hours left to get your Halloween on, so just listen already.

This year Halloween fell on a weekend (sorry, it had to be said) and Subatomic Sound and J. Rockaz have inspired me to compile this top 10 list of spooky reggae jams to drop between “Thriller” and Fela’s “Zombie” at your haunted houseparty. Anything related to duppies, ghosts, vampires, zombies and other undead creatures is fair game and the truly scary thing is how many classic reggae tunes there are that fall into this ghoulish category once you start um, digging. Maybe there are heaps of spooky soca and merengue jams I just don’t know about but it certainly seems like the supernatural is a recurring theme in Kingston, a town that has produced crews called Monster Shack and Scare Dem–not to mention Ghost! Whatever the reason, there are way more than 10 so let’s get started. Grab that flashlight and follow me, kids!

Boogidy boogidy BOO! It’s Thriller time once again my friends and that means you got to get your “Boogie On” on the dancefloor and elsewhere, ’cause otherwise …BOO! (got you again).
