When terrible shit jumps off in some other part of the world, the mind automatically goes to the people you know who are there or are somehow connected to it. For many of us in the New York DJ circuit, the first person we thought of when we heard the news about Haiti was undoubtedly Madsol-Desar. Not only because he is everywhere, DJing at the most unexpected events and tirelessly representing his side at the rest. But also because long before the talking heads could find Haiti on a map, he was doing his thing to focus the eyes of the world on his native land with the Blood of Haiti mixtape and movement.

Samuel Dalembert steps up for Haiti

As Large Up’s resident basketball head, Gravy asked me to speak a little piece about Samuel Dalembert, the Haitian hoops star who’s stepped up MASSIVELY for his homeland these last few days. You may have heard about how the Philly center grabbed 21 rebounds against the Knicks Tuesday night just hours after learning of the earthquake and desperately attempting to charter a plane to Haiti, or his pledge to match all donations to relief efforts made by fans at last night’s game against the Sacramento Kings. But long before this week’s devastation, the Port-Au-Prince native was already giving back to his homeland through his philanthropic organization, the Samuel Dalembert Foundation, and trips like this one in 2007:

Yardies for Haiti

In case you’ve been off the grid, Port au Prince experienced a 7.0 quake on the richter scale yesterday (January 12th), devastating the most populated area of a country that is possibly the least equipped to deal with a humanitarian crisis of these proportions. While famous Haitian faces like Wyclef and author Edwige Danticat are all over CNN raising awareness about the dire situation, artists from across the west indian diaspora have been pitching in and spreading the word in their sectors.
