Sweet Deal: Watch Common’s New Video, Support Haitian Relief

Words by Jesse Serwer

Common premiered the video for his new single “Sweet” last night on Ustream, as part of a fundraising effort to support Haiti’s recovery from last year’s devastating earthquake. The cost was minimal and more than worthwhile: $1, with all proceeds going to the J/P Haitian Relief Organization. Shot over a four day trip to Port-au-Prince last month, the video is a dizzying, cinema vérité journey through the city, with Common adopting a notably gruff demeanor to match the aggressiveness of a record on which he proclaims, “I am to hip-hop what Obama is to politics” and “when it comes to hip-hop it begins and ends with me.” Friends in the White House or not, we’re guessing The Dreamer/The Believer (out next month) is going to feel more like Resurrection than Electric Circus.

Cinema Antilles: The Flatbush Film Fest Goes Francophone

Words by Jesse Serwer

CariBBeing‘s Fl@tbush Film Festival, a month-long series of weekend screenings which launched last Friday at MoCADA in Brooklyn (in Fort Greene, however, not Flatbush), switches locations tonight to the Maysles Cinema in Harlem, for a pair of documentaries from the French Antilles. While Janluk Stanislas’ Nou Yorkers follows a crew of graffiti writers from Guadeloupe who sojourn to New York City to mingle with idols and practice their art in its mecca, Conversation A Une Voix…Avec Max Cilla tells the story of traditional flute master Max Cilla, known as “Le Pere de la Flute” (“The Father of the Mountain Flute”) in Martinique.

The Believers: Behind the Scenes of Common’s “Sweet” Video Shoot in Haiti

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

It seems like rapper-turnt-actor and Okayplayer for life Common stepped off the set of one video shoot in LA and right onto a gulfstream jet bound for Port-Au-Prince to shoot the next one, for the next single off his forthcoming LP The Dreamer, The Believer.  The track is called “Sweet” and Common is clearly at fighting weight for this appearance. And based on the francophone snippet playing in the background the song should be le mastodonte–even if it sounds more like “Les Fleur” than Sweet Micky (FYI, it’s actually a sample from Tropeau Bleu, the 1975 LP from Cortex–thank you Dr. Google!). Team Com looks like they are making the most of their Haiti trip and most of all its good to see Port-au-Prince on the same world-conquering itinerary that includes The NY Times best seller list and the White House. Check it out and stay chuned for more on this.

Fashion Fridays: Haiti x Donna Karan x Urban Zen

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton, via Cutlass & Cane

David Belle’s Naturally Haiti is a sort of impressionistic documentary short following Donna Karan as she works with Haitian artisans on a line of homewares and accessories that reflect African inspiration, local Caribbean crafts and a modern approach to objects like tobacco-leaf vases, sculpted horn bowls and utensils and multi-colored beads of recycled paper. The pieces are currently available only in the Urban Zen stores in Greenwich Village and Sag Harbor and proceeds go directly to the Urban Zen Foundation (you can find out more about their stated missions: “Well-Being, Preserving Cultures, Empowering Children” here). Although the film–which is as beautiful as the objects manufactured in front of the lens–centers on the housewares, there is also a collection of jewelry (at bottom) from French/Hispanic/Apache designer Isabel Encinias, who has “been traveling regularly with Donna Karan to Haiti with the objective of developing artisan commerce sustainability projects.”

Like A Champion: Haitian Teen Touted as Next Venus

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton, via CNN

oc.duval.tennis.haiti.cnn.640x360

15-year old Haiti-to-Atlanta transplant Vickie Duval is being touted by some as the next Venus Williams, a potential tennis champion with the athleticism and all-around game to go the far distance on the clay court. Better yet, from the media’s POV, she has an epic back-story to go with her outsized talent. We won’t give it away but it involves, of course, the Haiti earthquake of 2010, which trapped her father under the rubble of his medical practice in Port-Au-Prince (get the full story in this CNN feature below). Although Vickie has only played in one WTA tournament as a wild card and it’s a long road to Wimbledon, but her future is already stunna shade-bright. Either way, we’ll be in the stands.
