Lion Share: Snoop + Gyptian Freestyle on the Kuff Riddim

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Snoop and Gyptian VP Records

Just when we were thinking about putting Snoop on the permanent pay-no-mind list (c’mon son), Mr. Lion has gone ahead and done something kinda cool. Namely freestyling over the classic ’80s dancehall riddim Kuff (the Wittys Shelly Thunder version, not the Jammys version, to be specific) with Gyptian on the Randy’s Reggae radio show during Snoop’s in-store appearance at the VP Records store in Queens. We’re not saying the Doggfather’s freestyle is mindblowing or nuthin’, but for a guy who doesn’t write his own lyrics anymore, he comes off alright.

Impressions: A St. Mary Mi Come From, Capleton’s Gift to Jamaica

Words and Photos by Martei Korley—

Originally Capleton’s annual A St. Mary Mi Come From concert was scheduled for August 5, the eve before Jamaica’s 50th Independence Day. But that was before Hurricane Allen decided to pass by, and drop wind and water en masse (not to mention rolling power outages) on the entire island. Rumors of an October rain date circulated for a while, but fortunately the 18 of August was chosen instead. Where the original date was a wash-out, this date was definitely tun-up! LargeUp made the journey again and arrived just in time to see Dr. Julius Garvey, son of the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey, who was in the country in celebration of the 125th Birthday of his father. Standing on stage with the Fireman himself, he said: “Big Up to all Rastaman, dem keep the memory of Marcus Garvey alive — Nuff Respect!”

Video Premiere: Area 51 Riddim Medley + Munga “We So Bad”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

The latter four recently took to the streets and clubs of Kingston with video director Biggz D Boss for a medley video, with Munga’s “We So Bad” also getting the full-length video treatment. (Speaking of Mr. “Bad From Mi Born,” check out his new Slap Weh mixtape with DJ Kitt on last week’s Mixtape Mondays) Watch both clips below, and look out for more from Russian and Head Concussion over here real soon.
