Tarrus Riley World Creole Festival

The well respected and most talented Tarrus Riley has always put out reggae hits that everyone enjoys, always having strong roots in his culture and working with fellow reggae artists. This time Tarrus Riley has teamed up with someone outside of the reggae world, Anuhea, a singer/songwriter from Hawaii whose musical background is more folk rock than roots reggae. Tarrus and Anuhea’s collaboration “Only Man In The World” is the first single from Dub Rockers, a new label under VP Records.

Back to Life: Estelle, Erykah, Marsha Ambrosius + Questlove Honor Soul II Soul

Words by Jesse Serwer, via Okayplayer

Among the performances on Monday night’s VH1 Divas broadcast, a definite highlight was Estelle, Erykah Badu, Marsha Ambrosius’ tribute to one of my personal favorite groups of all time, Soul II Soul. Backed by Okayplayer’s own don dada Questlove on the decks, the ladies version of “Back to Life” was entirely too short, (at just 2:30, vs. the usual 3:48 that the song clocks in at), but, thanks to Quest’s built-from-scratch recreation of its distinctive drums, it came off quite smooth. We’re just glad to see some Caribbean representation at this thing. But where were Jazzie B and Caron Wheeler, though?

Mixtape Mondays: Million Stylez x Safari Sound, Estelle x Don Cannon and D’Bandit

Words by DJ Gravy

So while our resident Mixtape Mondays contributor DJ Theory is pretty much Amish til Northwest Massachusetts gets its power turned back, I told him I’d hold it down (and that a generator might be a good investment!) But we got the goods here—you know what it is, as always… enjoy.

Black Gals Rock: Win Tickets to See Estelle in NYC 10/13

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

This Thursday, October 13th undercover UK dancehall queen (yes, we seen you doing your thing at a Federation dance!) Estelle will be headlining Beverly Bonds’ world-renowned Black Girls Rock tour. The line-up for the New York stop is a veritable hurricane of gal-power featuring Rah Digga, Lil Mama and Be’la Donna in addition to Bev and ‘Stelle.  Since she is half-Senegalese and half-Caribbean, we called jurisdiction on half of Estelle (we’re gonna half to fight with Okayafrica over which half) and got 1 pair (2 tix) of BGR passes to give away to you, the lotal LargeUp reader.
