“Watch Out” Now: Major Lazer x Busy Signal, “Watch Out For This (Bumaye)”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Major Lazer Bumaye Video

Of the collaborations promised on Major Lazer‘s upcoming Free the Universe LP, “Watch Out For This (Bumaye)” featuring Busy Signal is one of those that most piqued our interest. Not only has Busy been on a quality-filled tear since returning home to Jamaica from a US prison stay last year (though surely the song’s vocals were recorded before that), but the song promised to match Busy’s dancehall style with some Latin flavor, an arena where he has excelled in the past. Add in the early ’90s JA period-piece video (directed by dancehall director Jay Will) that Major Lazer shot on a recent visit to Kingston (see above photo), and color us intrigued.

Major ‘Smoker’: Aidonia’s Weed Anthem Gets a Lazer-Powered Remix

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Walshy Fire x Major Lazer x Aidonia

Aidonia recently dropped a new weed anthem, “Joker Smoker,” and we hear it’s hitting in Jamaica with the strength of 1,000 ounces of high-grade. Produced by Yosuke “Pancho” Kawamoto of Japanese duo Gachapan, it’s built around a sample of Triston Palmer’s 1982 classic of the same name. Though it’s only been around a week, it’s already making some serious waves.

Peak Music: Download Acmatic’s “Washed Out”

Words by Tasha Brown, Photo by Martei Korley—

LargeUp Acmatic

Acmatic is not your traditional Caribbean group. The band, which LargeUp has been following for a few years now, has many influences in its music, which spans hip-hop, EDM, dancehall, rock, new wave and more, and they continue to push the envelope with their constant blending and mixing of genres. You can’t define Acmatic (whose name means the peak) or put the Diplo-approved band in any particular box, but I’m sure that’s the point.

Audio: Rising Reggae Star Chronixx Gets Free With Major Lazer

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Major Lazer x Chronixx x Walshy Fire

For its second-ever collaborative mixtape (the first being Lazerproof, with British synth-pop group La Roux), Major Lazer has teamed with up-and-coming Jamaican artist, Chronixx. While some of you may be going “who?,” it’s a savvy move for Diplo and crew, as the singjay has quickly risen from obscurity to become one of JA’s most talked about new artists.

Rub a Dubstep: Damian Marley and Skrillex “Make It Bun Dem”

Words by Jesse Serwer and DJ Gravy—

We were a bit surprised when we first came across Skrillex and Damian Marley’s ”Make It Bun Dem,” in its original form under the name “Rudeboy Bass,” earlier this year. While dubstep has obvious roots in dub music, and producers such as Rusko were making reggae-influenced dubstep early on, as the music has progressed from an underground London phenomenon to the soundtrack of fuzzy boot-wearing teenyboppers, this connection has been obscured. And no one’s done more to turn dubstep into the new soundtrack for the Hot Topic set (and a genre worthy of recognition by the Grammys) than Skrillex.
