As you’ve probably heard, hip-hop icon Snoop Dogg recently took his career in a radical new direction, inspired by reggae, Bob Marley and the message of Rastafari. Snoop spent some time in Jamaica last winter to work on his debut reggae album, holding a press conference at Manhattan’s Miss Lily’s (where the pics in this post were shot) to announce his transformation from rapper to reggae artist and trading his canine status in for his new feline moniker,  Snoop Lion.

The second annual Dub Champions Festival kicks off in NYC tonight and, needless to say, we are amped, with an empasis on amp. Yes, that was us who just bought the the Guitar Center out of earplugs, in preparation for this weekend’s events. Not only will Scientist be reconvening live on stage with Roots Radics and Johnny Osbourne for a live performance of 1981′s Scientist Rids the Curse of the Evil Vampires—a contender for greatest dub album of all time—but for the second year, the fest will host a live performance by our toppa top personal hero, Lee “Scratch” Perry.

GIVEAWAY: Win Tix to See Scientist + Roots Radics In NY

In what is sure to be the highlight of next week’s Dub Champions festival in NYC, Scientist and the Roots Radics Band are set to meet on stage Friday, Sept. 21, for what we think may just be the first-ever live performance of their crucial 1981 dub album, Scientist Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires, at BB King’s. In any case, it’ll certainly be the first time they’ve taken the stage with Johnny Osbourne, whose “He Can Surely Turn The Tide” was dubbed into Evil Curse‘s “Plague of Zombies.”
