Video: Nas + Damian Marley “Nah Mean”

Words by Jesse Serwer

Nas and Damian Marley continue to promote their year-old Distant Relatives project more vigorously this year than they did when it first came out, with another video filmed on the streets of Kingston. “Nah Mean” begins where their last one for “Land of Promise” left of, literally: the end of that video actually segues into this one. It’s an appropriate tie-in, considering those two stand way out as the most rewind-worthy, high-energy tunes on what was overall a pretty solid album. Out of all the videos that have emerged for the project thus far, “Nah Mean” is the most simplistic—it’s essentially one long shot—but it might also be the most effective, what with its non-stop forward motion and spliced-in crowd audio direct from the shoot. Nah mean?

Video: Nas & Damian Marley “Land of Promise”

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton (via Okayplayer)

The dynamical duo of Pan-African upliftment, Nas and Damian Marley are back with the next video from the Distant Relatives project. “Land of Promise” happens to be one of my personal joints from the album–maybe the track where the rap, the reggae vibes and the whole United States of Africa theme best come together as one, thanks in no small part to the classic Aswad/Dennis Brown riddim. They went for a documentary-style shoot on the streets of Kingston for this one (please note Spragga Benz, Jah Cure and other reggae stars posted up in the background) as contrasted with the Egypto-crypto-mystical CGI of “Patience,” but the message still comes through loud and proud.

Free Money: Jahdan “Quick Money” World Premier + Free Download!

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

JD vessel

If you never did know our good bredrin and LargeUp contributor DJ Theory also happens to be a prolific DJ (duh) and producer with several dusty fingers dipped into the worlds of hiphop and reggae, respectively. Not too long ago, he sneak-leaked a track from Jahdan Blakkamoore, one of our favorite artists here at LU, called “Quick Money”–a brilliant flip of the same “Sabali” sample that Nas & Damian Marley used on “Patience.”  With a Guyanese Brooklyn singjay attacking a rap beat built from an Afropop gem it’s kind of like the ultimate pan-tropical, OkayEmpire theme song and  I had to have it for a blend on my Ghetto Palms column. Blakkamoore represents himself something fearsome, like Nas & Jr. Gong in one, plus a little Bounty Killer gone dubstep on the doubletime breakdown. Anyway, now that everything is properly signed off and mixed down, LargeUp is proud to present the world premier of “Quick Money” in it’s official, FREELY DOWNLOADABLE form. Stream below and then get it here. Quick! Before the federales storm in again.

Pass The Torch: Cedella Marley x PUMA x 2012 Olympics

Words by Jason “J-Rockaz” Orford

As you may (or may not) know, Jamaica’s track team is a lightning-fast force not to be played with. With all eyes on superstar Usain Bolt the 2012 Olympics in London will surely feel like a Kingston stage show once the JA athletes hit the tracks–a highly anticipated moment in Olympic history. And who better to outfit the team with some wicked garms for this auspicious occasion than a Marley? Cedella Marley, that is.

Ova-Mars: Bruno Mars x Damian Marley’s “Liquor Store Blues” Video

Words by DJ Gravy

One of pop’s biggest new stars, Bruno Mars, has a serious reggae jones. First there was “Billionaire,” the 2010 ubiqu-hit he co-wrote, co-produced and co-starred on with former Gym Class Hero Travie McCoy. Fresh off of his Grammy win two weeks ago for co-writing and co-producing Cee-Lo’s “Forget You,” Mars (whose other behind-the- scenes work includes writing for Flo-Rida, Brandy and Sean Kingston), just dropped a curiously smoky video for “Liquor Store Blues,” a collabo with Jr. Gong from his Doo-Wops & Hooligans album.  While “Billionaire” revived the good-time, pop-rock-reggae vibes of ’90s staple Sublime, “Liquor Store Blues” has a more authentic yard vibe, thanks to Black Chiney’s Supa Dups, who co-produced the track with Mars’ own Smeezingtons camp. Check the video below, and look out for more Jamaican vibes from this rising Hawaiian/Filipino/Puerto Rican star in the future—it’s coming.

Distant Past: Nas & Damian Marley’s New Video for ‘Patience’

Words by Jesse Serwer

NasPatience

In an era when chatter about new albums typically dies out a week after their release date, Nas and Damian Marley’s Distant Relatives has had an impressively long shelf life. Nearly nine months after the LP first hit stores, the project has just birthed its second video, for album standout “Patience.” The surreal clip, prophetically set in Egypt and directed by Nabil Elderkin (Kanye West’s “Paranoid,” “Coldest Winter” and “Welcome to Heartbreak” videos), was worth the wait. In a nice touch, it co-stars Malian husband-and-wife duo Amadou & Mariam, whose “Sabali,” is sampled on “Patience.”
