Carlton Livingston 2

Sure, hip-hop has The Chronic, “I Got 5 On It,” and Meth and Red’s entire catalog, but when it comes to weed-smoking anthems, reggae is king. With literally tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of reggae weed anthems to choose from, we selected some of our favorites and tapped the artist behind one of ‘em, Carlton “100 Weight of Collie Weed” Livingston, to run down the best of the best. Earlier this week, we rolled out numbers 20-11 in our first video. With 4/20 upon us, here’s the Toppa Top 10.

If you know your smokers’ anthems, you know Carlton Livingston. The St. Mary-born, Kingston-raised singer is responsible for one of reggae’s biggest weed tunes ever,  “100 Weight of Collie Weed.” And he’s got more where that came from: his “Trodding Through the Jungle” made an appearance on our Toppa Top 10 Slept-On Weed Anthems for 4/20 last year, too. After catching up with Carlton at last month’s Rice and Peas party, we brought him over to the The Kennel Recording Studio in Brooklyn to count down our Toppa Top 20 Weed Anthems for 4/20.

Toppa Top 10: Ten Slept-On Weed Anthems For 4/20

Words by Jesse Serwer and Herbert Spliffington—

On this very day one year ago, we brought you our Toppa Top 10 weed tunes for 4/20. We missed some sure, but this was our countdown of the classics, those indisputable smokers anthems every reggae fan knows. In an effort to one-up our own selves, this year we thought we’d go a little deeper into the stacks and bring your attention to some hi-powered ganja anthems you might not remember, and not just because you forgot where you put them in your record crate. Some are more obscure than others, but they’re all deserving of rediscovery. Enjoy.
