The LargeUp Sessions Mixtape Vol. 1: D-Life’s T&T 50 Mix

Words by LargeUp Crew—

2012 is a huge year for the Caribbean as many of its nations are celebrating 50 years of independence. This milestone ties into the anti colonial struggle which Rastafari is largely based on and the general sense of nationalism that makes Caribbean music so powerful. To mark the occasion we’ve launched our LargeUp Sessions Mixtape series, and to rep T&T we got one of the top Soca DJs in the game, Massive B‘s D-Life. He’s a resident selector on NYC’s Hot97, Miami’s Mixx96 and Sirius Satellite and happens to be a good friend of ours here at LargeUp.

So with no further adieu, stream or download on the player below, you may wanna draw for your rum stash and if at all possible, bring the mix outdoors, buss a whine and lick a shot for T&T!  Also, if you spot D-Life rocking w/ Massive B at this years West Indian Day Parade on monday in Brooklyn you might get yourself a limited copy of the CD – and as always, LargeUp yourself!

You Rate It: Nicki Minaj x Beenie Man, “Gun Shot”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Here at LargeUp we try to carefully curate all of our musical selections so you don’t have to. There’s plenty of other sites where you can sift through all the junk that gets thrown onto the Internet on a daily basis. But every now and then something drops that’s just too notable to ignore even if it’s not exactly our cup of tea. Such is the case with Nicki Minaj’s “Gun Shot” featuring Beenie Man.

European Union: Alborosie Remixes Amy Winehouse

Words by Jesse Serwer, via Salaam Remi

“Halftime” was a favorite on Lioness, the posthumous, Amy Winehouse odds-and-ends album that turned up late last year. (Not to take anything away from her great reggae version of “Our Day Will Come” or anything). Produced by longtime collaborator Salaam Remi, “Halftime” had more of a ’70s soul feel than we’d ever heard from the typically ’60s-oriented Amy, and it worked. There’s always room for improvement, or at least another take on things, though. So it is that Italian reggae artist Alborosie has gone ahead and put yet another spin on “Halftime,” reworking the tune in a reggae style. Salaam approves, and so do we. Stream and download below.

Visual Culture: ‘Lost’ Footage from Bob Marley’s Early Career

Words by DJ Gravy and Jesse Serwer, via BBC World Service

A friend of LargeUp has been telling us about his old friend, Esther Anderson, the Jamaican beauty queen and actress who, in a short span of time in the early 70′s, worked with Bob Marley, Chris Blackwell and starred alongside Sidney Poitier in the movie, A Warm December. This past weekend in London, Anderson (who took the famous photo of Marley smoking a spliff that’s appeared on posters, T-shirts and versions of Catch A Fire) premiered scenes from Bob Marley – The Making of a Legend, a film, still-in-progress, she is making from lost footage shot of Bob Marley and the Wailers for Island Records in the early ’70s. Anderson, who became romantically involved with Marley at the time, recalls her first meeting with him in her interview with Ron Bhola of BBC World Service: “He didn’t smile but he was very handsome with strong features, he reminded me of Jimi Hendrix,” she remembers.
