Toppa Top 10: Teddy King & DJ Gravy’s Top ’90s Hip-Hop x Dancehall Remixes

Words by Teddy King and DJ Gravy

Recently, our own DJ Gravy and DJ Teddy King of Boundless NY partnered on Back in Time, a mixtape gathering some of the best hiphop remixes of ’90s dancehall tunes. As you may (or may not) recall, in the ’90s it was fairly common practice for popular dancehall singles–especially ones by street-oriented artists like Bounty Killer, Supercat and Louie Rankin–to be remixed by replacing the original dancehall riddims with familiar hip-hop beats, theoretically enhancing the tunes’ crossover appeal in the States. In a few cases, such as Salaam Remi’s mix of Supercat’s “Ghetto Red Hot” and Lil Jon & Paul’s (yes, that Lil Jon) twist on Capleton’s “Tour,” these would go on to be the best known versions of these respective songs. More often, they simply became underground classics, encapsulating a time when there truly was a great exchange of ideas between hip-hop and dancehall. This kind of stuff is totally our shit, so we had Teddy and Gravy go back in time once more and run down their favorite tunes from the period (and the mixtape, specifically). —Jesse Serwer

Mad Again: The Return of South Rakkas Crew

Words by Jesse Serwer, via Mad Decent

It’s been a minute since we’ve heard anything new from South Rakkas Crew. The multinational (Canada and Florida-based) production team were detonating all sorts of riddims and remixes in the mid 2000s, most notably the Sizzla and Aidonia-voiced Chinkuzi, but have gone mostly quiet these last few years. Earlier this week, Mad Decent informed us about their latest venture,  Nuff Remixes, Vol. 1, a full-length LP of remixes by other producers of South Rakkas tunes like “Bun Up 3000″ (featuring Capleton), now available on iTunes. Stream the whole thing on Soundcloud, and download Schlachtofbronx’s “Bun Up 3000″ remix here.

Fashion Fridays: Deadly Dragon x Mighty Crown Reggae For Japan Tee

Words by Jesse Serwer

R4Japan600

Supporting Japan relief efforts is a no-brainer for so many different reasons. For one, it’s just the right thing to do. For another, Japan is one of the biggest markets for reggae and dancehall, and arguably the most loyal. So hell yeah we’re down with the Reggae For Japan event that Japan’s No. 1 sound Mighty Crown and promoters Irish and Chin are putting on June 5 at York College in Queens. The lineup is extra heavy: Damian Marley, Freddie, Chino and Stephen McGregor, Tarrus Riley, Maxi Priest, Capleton, Etana, Tanya Stephens, Mr Vegas, among others. Even better, since we’re always scouring for styles that we can believe in, New York’s Deadly Dragon Sound Syatem and Mighty Crown have produced this limited “Reggae For Japan” tee, with the Japanese flag’s red sun represented as a turntable. Cop it here, or better yet at the show.

Run Tune: Exclusive interview with DJ Child

Words by DJ Theory

Oakland's DJ Child

DJ Child is the hardest-working man in the reggae biz that you’ve never heard of–if you rely on mainstream channels for your music discovery, that is. As the mind behind Oakland-based Project Groundation, he is a pioneer on several levels; of a new mixtape format that condenses two or three LPs worth of original material into a coherent product with a central theme, of a particular musical vision that combines rasta-inflected reggae (think Sizzla) and fight the power gangster rap (think Dead Prez), and a post-digital DIY indie approach to music that encompasses everything from designing your own graphics to growing your own food. Appropriately, when Child and LARGE UP correspondent and music dude DJ Theory sat down to chop it up, they covered everything from dwarf banana trees to prison documentaries and the reggae scene in Mali.
