Buju Banton’s Triumphant Return to the Stage

Words by DJ Gravy

There is plenty we could talk about with Buju: the drama, controversy, theories and whatnot. But, as it’s been since he came on the scene as a tall, lanky teenager more than 20 years ago, it’s the music that interests us. So if you didn’t make it out to Bayfront Park Amphitheatre in Downtown Miami on Sunday (and even if you did), kick back and watch Mr. Myrie’s stellar performance, which was broadcast across Jamaica via Lime Mobile TV and had Jamaicans across the country gathering around friends’ cellphones to watch (Days earlier, Lime, the Jamaican telcom, created a run on their product by offering a “Buju Trade-In Special” allowing customers to exchange older phones for a free mobile TV phone, provided they purchased $2,000 Jamaican in credit). Over and out…

Toppa Top 10: Pop Music Catches Reggae-itis 2000-2010

Words by Jason “J-Rockaz” Orford

Reggaeitus–it’s contagious! In the last decade there has been a growing pattern of songs that included (or attempted to include) elements of reggae. A slice of reggae pie with your bubblegum, if you will. There have been horrible tracks that blended about as well as you would expect the flavors of rumcake and bubblegum to compliment each other. But still–we’ve been blessed with some cool tunes as well.

Words by J-Rockaz

John Legend and The Legendary Roots Crew have teamed up on a new project and with a meeting of the musical minds like that, you know the collaboration is sincere. Wake Up! is the name of their new album and it definitely speaks to you. It’s a soulful body of work, of course, but a nice surprise is the little splash of reggae that dropped in on the project. Don’t miss track number 8, “Humanity (Love The Way It Should Be).” You’ll have to cop the LP to hear it in all it’s glory but you can get catch the vibe and some insight into the tune’s significance from John and ?uestlove on this track by track breakdown:

Watch Me Now: Ranks & Grotesk

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

buju

Seems like everybody is getting inspired by the look and sound of classic dancehall these days and as any graphic designer knows the purest form of flattery is to slap your inspiration onto a t-shirt. The very same day this FADER post put us up on the new UK-based line of tees called Ranks–as the name suggest it seems to be a series of tributes to top-ranking old-school deejays like Buju (above) Shabba (after the jump) and Ninjaman–we also lucked up on these recent beauties from NY-based Swiss designer Grotesk, which deftly illustrate more slippery abstract concepts like “Super-Clash” and “Soundboy Burial.” If there’s any justice in the dancehall universe, the next Ranks tribute will feature a portrait of Supercat and the next Grotesk edition will visualize the metaphysical aspects of “Cabin Stabbin’” with some lincoln logs and a dagger.

Visual Culture: Darhil Crooks

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

We decided to profile Darhil Crooks on Large Up because we were pretty sure you didn‘t know that the same cat who designed album covers and tees for Buju Banton also happened to be the trendsetting art director of the award-winning Esquire magazine and we wanted to put you up. But once we sat down to reason with him, we started learning all kinds of things that even we didn’t know–like which former Jamaican Prime Minister happens to be his grandfather, about the time Dave Chappelle wore one of his t-shirts and how he came into possession of a miniature replica of Barack Obama’s head. In fact we learned so much we might have to break this interview into two parts. Maybe you better get started:
