Ground Provisions: Shopping For Caribbean Food in NYC

Words and Photos by Kaci Hamilton

On a recent trip to Essex Street Market for some hot pepper sauce, I wondered about shopping for Jamaican and Caribbean cooking supplies in the city. Where were some other places for picking up that hard-to-find seasoning, or fresh seafood and choice meats? So I did a little homework. It was like jumping on a plane to Kingston.

Kool Relief: Kool Herc Fundraiser At Sutra Tonight

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

HercOrange476

If you never did know, rap’s founding father Kool Herc has been in and out of the hospital due to kidney stones. Apparently the music legend is in need of major surgery but has no health insurance to pay for it. Born Clive Campbell in Kingston, Jamaica, Herc is generally recognized for applying the soundsystem culture of his native island to the soul and funk records that were popular in his adopted home in the Bronx–inventing this thing called hiphop in the process. DJ Tony Touch will be hosting a fundraiser tonight Tuesday 2/1 at Sutra bar in Manhattan to help pay Herc’s medical expenses which have already surpassed $10,000.00, not counting the cost of the necessary surgical procedure. We strongly encourage you to support it…details can be found here (and appropriately, LargeUp homies Max Glazer and Microdon will be applying hiphop techniques to Jamaican sounds downstairs). To the beat, y’all.
