Words by Jesse Serwer—

Mad Cobra Downsound Records

It looks like Josef Bogdanovich’s Downsound Records and producer Skatta Burrell plan on launching a full-on ’90s dancehall revival. Fresh from rejuvenating Ninjaman’s career with the Don Gorgon’s best new music in about 20 years, Downsound has just issued “We and Dem A War” from Ninja’s one-time rival Mad Cobra, on the same barebones, Skatta-produced riddim as Ninja’s “Dawg Nyam Yuh Supper.”

Words by Emily Shapiro, Photo by Alex Markow, via Rolling Stone

The annual Best of the Best concert during Urban Beach Weekend in Miami (or what’s known as Memorial Day Weekend to the rest of the United States) is  perhaps the only major U.S. festival where we see the stars of dancehall share equal billing with their hip-hop counterparts. While rappers like Meek Mill, Fabolous and Fat Joe topped this year’s bill, prime time was also reserved for I-Octane and Mavado, who recently signed to DJ Khaled’s label, We the Best, and LargeUp favorite Mr. Vegas closed the show, Shaggy, Serani, Chris Martin, Demarco, Marcia Griffiths, Admiral Bailey and other Jamaican artists also performed, while LargeUp friends Walshy Fire and Jabba were among the concert’s many hosts.

Summertime only means one thing for many music fans: mammoth outdoor festivals. These events are particularly important in the world of reggae, considering the association people outside the Caribbean make between Jamaican music and warm weather, sunshine and general good-time vibes. So while there’s a small handful of important wintertime events in the Caribbean like Sting, almost every reggae/dancehall fest worth its salt(fish) falls between May and September. Here’s our picks for the best summertime fests around the US, the Caribbean and the globe.
