Combination Style: Beer Meets Rum in Barbados

Words by Jesse Serwer—

10 Saints beer

People have been drinking their beer and whiskey together for years. If you spend time in pubs, surely you’ve tried or at least heard of an Irish car bomb. These days, there’s even a whole cottage industry of whiskey/beer crossover drinks. So why not a Caribbean concoction that combines beer with the flavor of the region’s own liquor specialty, rum?

LargeUp Premiere: Jr. Blender Remixes Rihanna’s “Diamonds”

Words by DJ Theory—

Hamburg, Germany producer Jr. Blender (of So Shifty and Supersonic Sound fame) strikes again, this time putting in work on two Rihanna tunes. Honestly this dude could remix every one of Rihanna’s tunes for the span of her career and I wouldn’t be the least bit mad… He was kind enough to drop these new versions off for us to share with you—one a sparkling reggae verion of her current anthem “Diamonds“, the other a one drop drum edit for the DJs of the already reggae-inspired “No Love Allowed.” Rihanna’s voice and Bajan background naturally lean towards reggae, and it seems to work particularly well in the capable hands of Jr. Blender (let’s not forget his flawless rendition of “Where Have You Been“). DJs and Rihanna fans need to get with both of these pronto. Stream and download below—for more downloads, pass thru Blenders personal stash here.

UK Swag: Stream Jodie Connor + Stylo G’s “Talk”

Words by Emily Shapiro—

Today, we’ve got a fresh new single from some serious talent in the UK. Jodie Connor, an R&B singer/songwriter recently signed to 3 Beat Records, has released a collab with a good friend to Large Up, Mr. Winter Swag himself, Stylo G. Connor, who’s family is from Barbados, first received attention for her vocals and songwriting for Roll Deep’s UK hit, “Good Times.” Now the beauty has her own EP coming out, and her single “Talk” featuring Stylo G has a dancehall vibe that connects to her Bajan roots. We expect big tings from her EP, which will have collaborations with Wiley and producer, Rymez, and is said to have some classic lover’s rock type sounds on it.

Check It Deeply: Caribbean Music’s New Dark Side

Words by Jesse Serwer—

LargeUp Haleek Maul

Haleek Maul is a 16-year-old kid making some of the grimmest rap we’ve ever heard from a yute. Notably, he’s from sunny Barbados, home of Alison Hinds, Ri-Ri and Cropover. Maul was born in New York, and spends his summers here in the States, which perhaps helps explain his inclination towards dark imagery and woozy, creepy beats a little more. Witness his latest video for “M00N,” off of his recent collaborative LP, Chrome Lips, with Chicago producers Supreme Cuts. Directed by the editor of Vice, the visuals are bathed in horror-movie reds. Nothing we haven’t seen before, but the sort of thing we haven’t really seen from the Caribbean, with one notable, recent exception
