Incredible Bongo Man: King Errisson, the Percussionist Behind “Apache”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

King Erisson still from "Sample This"

An epic clash of Afro-Caribbean rhythms and Western movie bombast, the Incredible Bongo Band’s “Apache” is the grand poobah of breakbeats, a record so integral to the development of hip-hop that Kool Herc himself called it hip-hop’s national anthem. And now “Apache” is the subject of a new documentary, Sample This (check the trailer below), which connects it not only to Bronx DJ pioneers and Missy Elliott but also Robert F. Kennedy, the Beatles and Charles Manson, among others. Whoa. We expect it will also shine a nice, shiny spotlight on the great King Errisson, the Bahamian conguero whose bongo playing is the epicenter of “Apache”‘s titanic rumble.

Exclusive Q+A: Lenny Kravitz Speaks on ‘America’ & The Bahamas

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

As I mentioned/tweeted/trumpeted the other day I got the opportunity to chop it up with rockstar Lenny Kravitz recently about a range of topics on the occasion of his new album Black & White America, which drops tomorrow. Although the conversation was limited by Lenny’s superman schedule–taping for the new film Hunger Games while, touring and supporting the new LP–we manage to cover a range of topics from Obama’s speech on race to his own creative process. But I couldn’t let him hang up the phone without picking his brain a little bit on his Caribbean roots–which found their way onto B&WA in the form of the song “Boongie Drop,” easily the freshest-sounding track on a very retro album. You can get the rest of the interview at our channel partners Okayplayer but read on for a brief snippet covering the inspiration for that song, his studio in the Bahamas, and his personal connection to the islands.

Burning & Looting: Top 10 Actual Pirates Of The Caribbean

Words by Jason “J-Rockaz” Orford and Eddie STATS Houghton

PiratesFlag

If you live anyplace which receives TV signals from Earth, you are probably aware that the new Pirates of The Caribbean movie, On Stranger Tides, opened this past Friday because it was actually bigger news than The Apocalypse (which premiered Saturday to disappointing box office turnout.) Of course this just confirmed our own irrational belief-system here at LargeUp, which revolves around the idea that all gigantic pop culture phenomena actually start in the Caribbean.Well, then. Here is our top 10 list of the original gun-pon-teeth badmen, the real-life, self-made maritime gangstas who inspired the Disney World ride turned Johnny Depp movie franchise.
