AUDIO: Addis Pablo &The Suns of Dub, “Selassie Souljahz (Vocal Dub)”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Addis Pablo Selassie Souljahz

Produced by the Bay Area’s DJ I-Vier, “Selassie Souljahz” is one of the tuffest reggae tunes to come across our desk so far this year. The conscious reggae posse cut features Chronixx, Protoje and Kabaka Pyramid longside Sizzla over a heavyweight, hip-hop influenced riddim. Melodica player and up-and-coming reggae force Addis Pablo, son of the late Augustus Pablo, and his group Suns of Dub have reworked the song five times over for an upcoming EP due out next month on I-Vier’s Royal Order label.

Throwback Photo: Augustus Pablo Meets The Twin Towers Downtown

Words by Jesse Serwer, Photo by Ted Bafaloukos—

Augustus Pablo at the World Trade Center

Via the excellent Dirty Old New York City Facebook page comes this gem of a photo depicting the late Augustus Pablo and friends, on New York’s West Side Highway, with the World Trade Center in the background. The lights from the then-brand-new Twin Towers flickering behind Pablo in the early evening create an effect that is nothing short of ghostly. It truly captures a moment in time that is New York in the mid ’70s—when you could pose on one of the city’s main highways, with no cars in sight!

East of the River Hudson: Tiombe Lockhart x Augustus Pablo

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Tiombe Lockhart is smitten. With some lucky fellow, and the music of Augustus Pablo. Or maybe that dude is the departed Augustus himself. Alls we know is that Lockhart, of Brooklyn art-funk trio Cubic Zirconia, must be in love, because we’re not used to such direct emotional outpouring from the vocalist behind  “Fuck Work” and “Hoes Come Out At Night.”

Toppa Top 8: Don Corleon Selects His Favorite Dub Records + Exclusive Interview

Words by Jesse Serwer

don-corleon

Donovan “Don Corleon” Bennett’s Dub in HD, out today on iTunes, Amazon and other online music retailers, is the first dub album by a major Jamaican producer that we’ve heard of in years. Corleon, the producer behind some of the largest riddims of the last decade, told us the project is meant not as a money-making proposition but specifically to expose the next generation of reggae/dancehall fans and producers to the sound and technique. We quizzed Corleon about the project, but–this being Toppa Top 10 Tuesdays and all—first we asked him to break down some of his all-time favorite dub LPs.
