Check It Deeply: Rihanna x Vita Coco x Crop Over

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

A mysterious wooden box turned up in the LargeUp/Okayplayer office today, cargo cult style, with a single bottle of coconut water in it. That’s because this is the week Vita Coco launched it’s new Rihanna-branded line of tropical fruit-flavored coconut water. Rihanna has been the company’s spokesgal for a minute and the combination makes perfect sense from a branding perspective (although from a personal perspective; too fruity.)

LargeUp Exclusive: Win Tickets to See Los Rakas + Maluca in NYC 7/21

Words by Jesse Serwer and Eddie STATS Houghton

Armin Van Buuren, be damned. Heineken might be Dutch but left-of-center Latin music is what it’s meant to be drank to, and to prove it they’ve organized “The Spot,” a series of performances and parties (curated by Latin nightlife guide Remezcla) featuring Tego Calderon, Los Rakas, Maluca and more at a top-secret location in New York City. We can’t tell you where Los Rakas, Maluca and Brazilian baile funk star Zuzuka Poderosa will be this Thursday night (July 21st) at 8 PM but we do have two free pairs of tickets to the event to give away. For your chance, follow us on twitter and tweet the following phrase: I want to win tix to see Los Rakas & Maluca at #TheSpot by #Heineken this thursday thanks to @largeupdotcom. Remember you MUST follow @largeupdotcom so we can DM you confirmation and details on how to collect your tix if you win (and if you can’t spell ‘Maluca’ correctly, we’re sorry but you don’t qualify).  In the meantime, get familiar by watching our Now Things webisodes with Maluca and Los Rakas, and check a video preview of the series (which actually kicked off last week—sorry, Tego fans) below.

Rum Wars: Beenie Man Meets Vybz Kartel Inna Liquor Shop

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

The developments around Vybz Kartel’s split with business partner Corey Todd–with whom he built a mini-empire comprising brands like Street Vybz rum and the Building nightclub–may have more effect on purchasers of fine (and not-so-fine) spirits than on Jamaica’s music industry, it turns out. A week or so ago Todd announced that he was partnering with dancehall’s Beenie Man on a new product called Yaad Swag, designed to fill the void in the marketplace left by the disappearance of the Street Vybz brand.

Not that long ago, we talked a little smack about getting an exclusive look at the menu for downtown’s best kept secret spot Miss Lily’s Favourite Cakes when food critics were being turned away left and right. Since then the lid’s come off a little. The menu is no longer top secret, Miss Lily’s has opened to more than just friends and family and everyone from Padma Lakshmi to Grub Street knows that its the new spot to be in Soho/West Village.

LargeUp TV: Lady Saw, Lingerie & the LES

A LargeUp Exclusive Webisode – Words by Jesse Serwer, Photos by DJ Gravy, Video shot and edited by Frank Siringo

When LargeUp was offered the opportunity to interview Lady Saw recently, we knew immediately where we wanted to bring her: lingerie shopping. The first lady of dancehall has long been the Caribbean’s leading spokesperson on female sexuality, and we’d heard she plans to launch her own line of bedroom attire soon. Only problem was, ladies underwear shops don’t exactly relish having film crews on the premises—at least not on short notice. So instead we introduced Ms. Saw to LargeUp’s own Jamaican model/trainer extraordinaire Kelli “Natural” Thompson and brought them to Spur Tree Lounge on Manhattan’s Lower East Side for some girl talk over jerk wings and cocktails. The ladies discussed the latest Saw album My Way, hair, shoes, prepping for shows and, of course, concepts for the lingerie line, including outfits inspired by her tunes “Stab Out The Meat,” “Hardcore” and “Pretty P” (Not to mention bras with chains and pockets for condoms.) As the artist herself said, “Lady Saw is sex, and sex sells.”

Whiskey Pon The Rocks: Bushmills x Theophilus London

Words by Jason “J-Rockaz” Orford

Recently, as I passed briskly (Johnny Walker style) through the heavy rush-hour bustle of the Atlantic Avenue station in downtown Brooklyn, I found myself giving a quick LargeUp nod to Trini bwoy Theophilus London–who was staring back at me from an ad for Bushmills. Atlantic station, for those unfamiliar, is one of the most high-traffic transportation hubs in NYC and has recently received an extensive face-lift including new digital signage, better lighting, a fresh coat of paint and of course the mind-altering message boards we call ads, posted to speak to those of us on the platforms as we wait impatiently for the 2 to Flatbush or the 4 to Utica. It’s also a space where, despite gentrification, you can still people-watch and appreciate the vibrant fabric of West Indian culture weaving to and from the outer-borough settlements of Flatbush and Crown Heights.
