Giant Steps: Victor Cruz Takes “Silk City Salsa” Talents To Times Square

Words by Jesse Serwer, via NY Daily News:::Photo by Craig Warga—

If you watch (American) football or just live in the New York area, you’ve probably seen the salsa dance that New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz does every time he celebrates scoring a touchdown. Yesterday, the Puerto Rican Cruz, who says his steps are his way of paying homage to his grandmother, who taught him the steps, paid a visit to Modell’s Sporting Goods in Times Square, where a T-shirt in his honor (which reads “Cruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuz” on the front, after the chant popular at Giants games, while depicting his “Silk City Salsa” moves on the back) is currently the store’s most popular item. The highlight, of course, was a demonstration of his endzone celebration with a group of kids and admiring females. Watch the New York Daily News’ video of the event below and, just in case you’re on the fence about who to support in next month’s Super Bowl game against the Patriots, read this New York Times profile from November on Cruz and Puerto Rican players in the NFL.

LargeUp TV: Obama Rockin’ with Ikon Tyquan

Words, Photos and Video by Martei Korley

I first met  “Tyquan Di Girl Dem Ikon” when he was just a skinny youth hanging out at the Sandhurst Hotel in Kingston’s Barbican neighborhood, Summer 2006. I passed through there to see my now dearly departed friend, Natasja, who had then just landed in Jamaica, eager to participate in Red Stripe’s “Big Break” song competition. Ikon Tyquan was then a mildly under-stimulated gangly youth, but Natasja took a shine to him and incorporated one of his dance routines in her Sumfest Show.

Seen: The Large, Why Delila & Kazabon in Time Out London

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

Shimmy Shimmy blogger, No Ice Cream Sound editor and Selectress extraordinaire (not to mention LargeUp homegirl) Suze Webb was featured in Time Out London this week, along with her friends and collaborators Siobhan Jones and Karen Cazabon. Known professionally as The Large, Why Delila and Kazabon, respectively, the three female selectors have joined forces into an all-girl army of king fu killers known simply as Style & Swagger. As such they are clearly a force to be reckoned with in the London underground, putting their own distinctive spin on dancehall, soca–and tropical music generally–at club nights like Physically Fit and Hipsters Don’t Dance. Come to find out the three were linked by LargeUp UK correspondent Gabriel Heatwave, a tastemaker (and apparently, Queen-maker) in the UK bashment sphere. We put a few of our favorite quotes after the jump, but read the full article at TOL–and look for more big things from this trio in the near future.

Good Morning, Barbados: Alison Hinds Shows Matt Lauer How to Wuk Up

Words by Jesse Serwer

Matt Lauer from NBC’s Today Show recently traveled down to Barbados for the final stop on his annual journey around the globe. In a video currently floating around online, the host links up with Alison Hinds, who taught him how to wuk up, and introduced him to traditional Bajan costumed figures like “Shaggy Bear” and “Mother Sally.” Lauer tried to duck out of the dance lesson but, apparently, wukking up within three days of a snowshoeing accident is medically acceptable.

The Lion’s Master: Q+A with Junior “Gabu” Wedderburn

Words and Interview by Sherman Escoffery, Photos by Alex Solmssen

In her book Rock it Come Over, Dr. Olive Lewin describes the critical role of the Kumina Master Drummer: “The cyas drummer is crucial to the success of a bands,” writes Lewin, a Jamaican social anthropologist and musicologist. “He must not only be conversant with information about spirit activity and rhythm requirements but he must also learn the African language and interpret immediately. There are no short cuts to gaining this body of knowledge. Mistakes at this level will confuse singers, dancers and other knowledgeable participants, and threaten the success of any ritual or ceremony. ‘If you don’t play the drum good, and know what you doing, not a thing happen: not a spirit come, whole night…”
