Young, Gifted & Yellow is the name of VP Records/17 North Parade’s new Yellowman anthology. The disc, the title of which slyly references Nina Simone’s classic “Young, Gifted & Black,” features the lion’s share of Yellow’s classics from “Zungguzungguguzungguzeng” and “Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt” through to “I’m Getting Married in the Morning” and its inevitable sequel, “I’m Getting Divorced.”

In most years, the uber-prolific Sizzla would already have several albums out by this time. But the singer, still recovering from last year’s serious motorcycle accident, is just now getting set to release his first 2013 LP, The Messiah, through his Kalonji label, via VP Records. We recently received a preview of the album—reportedly Sizzla’s 70th—and one of the tracks that really grabbed our attention was “Good Love.” And not just because it’s Sizzla’s third song by that title (he previously appeared on a hip-hop influenced Lady Saw tune by that name, and released one of his own in 2011).

Sure, hip-hop has The Chronic, “I Got 5 On It,” and Meth and Red’s entire catalog, but when it comes to weed-smoking anthems, reggae is king. With literally tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of reggae weed anthems to choose from, we selected some of our favorites and tapped the artist behind one of ‘em, Carlton “100 Weight of Collie Weed” Livingston, to run down the best of the best. Cosby Show devotees will recall the “Full House” episode from the series’ first season, when Cliff Huxtable walked in on Denise and her new beau “Eddie Lakehart” grooving to Black Uhuru’s “Sponji Reggae.” The scene—specifically Denise and Eddie’s adlibbed lyrics—was memorable enough it earned Lisa Bonet and actor Clayton Prince an honorable mention on our Hollywood’s Top 10 Worst Jamaican Accents countdown from 2011.
