Ground Provisions: Jamaican and Panamanian Food Meet in Vermont?

Words by Jesse Serwer, Photo by Matthew Thorsen—

Cool Runnings Vermont

If you’re going to open a Jamaican spot in an area best known for winter sports and ski slopes, you’ve got to call it Cool Runnings, right? That’s just obvious. But what’s not typical or obvious is what’s happened at Negril native Leroy Headley’s Burlington, Vermont shop and restaurant since opening. Cool Runnings is the site of a rather unlikely— but practical— fusion now that Panamanian Mayllet Paz has joined Headley in the kitchen, adding dishes like Plátano en tentación to the menu.

Ground Provisions: Kingston Kitchen Spotlights Jamaican Flavor

Words and Photos by Erin MacLeod

Tropical climate, lush, green mountains, and access to the ocean make Jamaica a paradise for tourists, but also a tasty destination for folks who love food. Jacqui Sinclair, Melanie Miller and Leisha Wong made this fact deliciously clear, with the first edition of their Kingston Kitchen pop-up food events this past Sunday afternoon. They call it an “artisan open-air food court and food market series,” but it’s also a magazine and a concept. The women behind Kingston Kitchen (the slogan to which is “Love Yuh Like Cook Food”) want to encourage Jamaicans to appreciate the local flavors of the island—especially when working with local ingredients.

Ground Provisions: Dee and Ricky Cook Up Some Jerk Chicken

Words by Jesse Serwer

Dee and Ricky are making an unlikely entrance into the restaurant business. The twin designers behind the Lego belt, Starter jacket duffle bag and Kanye’s heart brooch, recently opened Dee and Ricky’s Home Cooking, a new eatery on Myrtle Avenue in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, that combines the brothers’ Caribbean and Southern roots (their parents hail from Georgia and Jamaica) with their quirky artistic sensibilities.

Ground Provisions: Jamerica and Jolly Bob’s in Madison, Wisconsin

Words by Jesse Serwer

I knew I would be drinking plenty of beer and eating lots of good food when I visited Madison, Wisconsin this past April, but I wouldn’t have guessed that this consumption would include washing down a plate of spicy jerk chicken with several bottles of Red Stripe. I also wouldn’t have figured while having that jerk and Red Stripe that I would only have to walk a few feet down the street to top it off with glasses of Barbancourt and Appleton Reserve—in a cozy yet comfortable nightspot with echoes of Negril. But such are the wonders of Williamson Street, a quiet commercial and residential street just outside of Madison’s much livelier downtown.
