LargeUp TV: Beres Hammond + the Roots at Late Night with Jimmy Fallon

Words by Jesse Serwer, Video by Jason Zucker—

Beres James Poyser Questlove

Yesterday, LargeUp got the unique opportunity to roll with Beres Hammond to 30 Rockefeller Plaza, for his first-ever U.S. talk show appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. After watching Beres sit in with the Roots for a version of “One Love, One Life,” the title track off of his superb new LP, we went backstage for a rare conversation with the King of Jamaican Lover’s Rock. We also caught up with the Roots Crew’s Jamaican members—”Captain” Kirk Douglas, keyboardist James Poyser and percussionist Frank Knuckles—yep, there’s three yardies in the Roots—to get their take on playing with the King of Jamaican Lover’s Rock, and what his music means to them. A rare peek at the roots of the Roots, if you will.

Captain Kirk said it best: “We’ve played with Sting, Bruce Springsteen and, for Beres to come here today, he’s like our Bruce Springsteen. ”

  1. So proud to see Beres on Jimmy Fallon and can’t believe it didn’t happen sooner. Hopefully this will open the door for other Reggae and Soca artists to appear on late nite TV, the morning, and afternoon programs as well. Thanks Jimmy Fallon.

I live on the east coast so I had to stay up to 12:35 am, which I never do because I am up at 5:15 am everyday, But, when I found out Beres was going to be on national television, I stayed up. Of course! Love you Beres!!!!!!

It was such a good move by Jimmy Fallon to hire the Roots as the show band, it has created a avenue for true black musicians to display their prowess. Big up to Fallon and of course the Roots. Wow, I did not know that James Poyser was now the Roots keyboardist….damn. R.I.P. J-Dilla

Many thanks to Jimmy Fallon for having Beres on his show, and to Large Up for such a beautiful feature on Beres. It’s so heart-warming to see a Reggae King getting love from my favorite band, The Roots. Made my day! Blessings to all.
