Jamaican-born NBA star Patrick Ewing wasn’t only a dominant center in the late ’80s and early ’90s, he was also the face of one of the era’s definitive sneaker brands. “Ewings” were like the hood version of Jordans, off-brand enough to be bought at a discount but cool enough to earn your peers’ admiration on the playgound, and a lot easier to find on the Ave. than at Foot Locker in the mall! I remember having the red ones in the 2nd grade when they first dropped, but I had to return them because they started falling apart within the first week. I’m not much of a sneaker head but I wonder if the reissued ones will be constructed differently.
