Brooklyn producer Dre Skull just debuted the first single off a full-length album he’s recorded with dancehall’s current undisputed champ Vybz Kartel. “Go Go Wine” streamed exclusively yesterday on Pitchfork, of all places, which tells you a little about how different this album is from every other record Vybz has put his stamp on. Even crazier, given the placement, it sounds like DANCEHALL–specifically an angry lovechild of the Showtime and Liquid riddims–as opposed to dancehall vocals collaged onto a tribal house track (not that we’re always mad at those). Just about the right tempo, in fact, to do some damage at street dances and dancehall mixshow but still fit a cameo verse from Jim Jones (or whoever) on the Hot97 refix. Best believe we’ll be watching this one for the summer.

lol looks like they put more love into the art direction of the mp3 ‘cover’ than into the actual song. Kartel tends to phone in his collabos. dunno why.
Is it me or does this sound like a total rehash, not very original at all… very similar to every tune vybez has been churning out. not bad, but there are many better more classic kartel songs out ill play. maybe the big deal here is the art or that the producer is white? (kind of a diplo wannabe)
for me one of the things that sometimes prevents me from being a Kartel superfan is the production values–Russian is a bit of an exception but overall the beats he churns out do not sound good. So just the fact that this sounds like his other shit but with much thicker sound already makes me a fan of this trk. Beyond that i think dre coaxes much more melodic flows out of Vybz, the kind of songs like “Yuh Love” that win over even the people who usually hate on his talents or don’t get his lyricism
